The measuring tools were counting fragments of sentences, and one of them filed a changing statement as a fixed one
VEILOS keeps a set of internal instruments whose job is to read everything the organism says in public and count it: how many statements it makes about the whole of something, how many times it declines to claim something it has not proven, and whether each of those refusals is worked out from live data or written down once as a fixed sentence. That last distinction matters, because a refusal worked out from live data will change or break if the thing it describes changes, whereas a fixed sentence will keep saying the same thing forever whether or not it is still true. Three of those instruments shared a fault. VEILOS, like most software, builds its longer sentences by joining several shorter pieces of text together. The instruments were reading those pieces one at a time and treating each piece as though it were a whole sentence. Most of the time that is harmless. It stopped being harmless in one specific place. There is a statement the organism publishes when part of its own self-inspection cannot reach something it is supposed to be checking. That statement fills in two live details each time it is produced, so it is exactly the kind that changes with the world. But the phrase in which it declines to claim anything happened to sit in the last of four joined pieces, and that piece by itself contains none of the live details. So the instrument recorded it in the category reserved for statements that cannot go out of date. That is the single most important judgement that instrument makes, and it was wrong about it. Measuring the same tree properly changed several published figures. Of the roughly six and a half thousand public sentences one instrument counts, a hundred and forty-two were not sentences at all but severed halves of sentences. Of the statements about the whole of something, one had been invisible entirely, because the word covering everything sat on one side of a join and the thing it was covering sat on the other. That hidden statement turned out to be a completely honest one — the organism describing how many of its own dreams have become lasting insight, and saying plainly in the same breath that the record it is counting from has a size limit and has not yet had to forget anything. The honesty is not the point. The point is that the instrument built to find exactly that shape of statement could not see it, and a tool that cannot see the honest cases has no standing to reassure anyone about the dishonest ones. A third instrument was measured too and had not moved at all, and that result is written down beside the other two rather than left out, because reporting only the numbers that changed is its own kind of misleading. All three instruments had been carrying their own private copy of the same text-reading routine. The previous release removed exactly that pattern from the organism proper — three copies of one piece of logic, each correct on its own and free to drift apart from the others — and put a single shared version in place. That repair was applied to the working parts of the organism and never to the instruments that watch them, and the copies had already begun to differ: one of the three had been taught something the other two had not. There is one shared version now, and a check that refuses to let any of the three grow a private copy again. Finally, one of these instruments published a limit on itself in one direction only. It stated, honestly, which kinds of refusal it is unable to notice. It said nothing about the opposite risk — sentences it wrongly counts as refusals when they are nothing of the kind — and two were found. One was an error message used internally as a test input, never shown to anybody. The other was a line of the organism's own dream-writing that happens to contain the words "cannot see" while refusing nothing at all. The first is now excluded on structural grounds, by where it sits in the code rather than by anybody judging what it says. The second is deliberately left in the count, because removing it would mean someone deciding by hand which sentences they like, and the published figure is now described as an upper bound rather than an exact tally. That is a weaker and more honest claim than the one it replaces. The storage accounting shortfall carried into this release untouched, now in its fifth release under measurement, remains a decision for the organism's founder rather than an engineering task, and the live status page continues to report it openly. No new dependency, paid service, provider resource, destructive operation or cost increase was introduced.
